A collection of highly detailed
lacquerware by the Japanese artist Atsuo Yamagishi.
Ideal for everyday use, this lacquerware has a uniquely
durable and "breathable" finish from the urushi tree.
These pieces seemingly change with time - the finish

New Narratives from
Cranbrook 3D Design
|
|
|
Cranbrook Academy of Art was
founded in 1932 with the goal of integrating art and
life. Guided by these ideals, the graduate 3D Design
program at Cranbrook has earned a world-wide reputation
as an experimental laboratory for exploring product
form. For today's young designers, the form and function
of Modernism is no longer sufficient. Today's products
"function" by telling a story and demonstrating a
specific cultural point-of-view in a product landscape
crowded with choices. The 2004-05 student work in this
show represents some of the ways that a new generation
of Cranbrook designers are using stories and
storytelling to integrate contemporary art, life, and
design.
Works by the following students will be
featured: Aaron Blendowski, Steve Bowden, Jason
Cornelius, Kelly Cullinan, Jared Dickey, Cassandra
Holman, Duck Young Kong, Kathryn Ludwig, Paul Martus,
Mark Moskovitz, Jada Schumacher, Erik Strom, John Truex,
Warit Tulyathorn, Thanapong Vudhichamnong and Yifei
Zha.

Tanabata
Celebration
|
|
|
A celebration of the Japanese
tradition of Tanabata, also known as the Star
Festival, which occurs on the yearly reunion of
Orihime and Hikoboshi, two lovers
separated by a river of stars. For this festival, people
traditionally wish for a clear sky on July 7th so that
the two fated lovers can meet. They also make wishes for
themselves on small strips of colored tanzaku
paper and hang them on bamboo branches. Bamboo plants
and tanzaku paper will be available for guests to
make their wishes.
For the first day of our
celebration, July 7, Rev. Mitsutaka Inui, who is a
Shinto priest and the Chief Officer of The International
Shinto Foundation, will be present to explain the
traditions of Tanabata. His introduction will be
followed by Miko-mai, a Japanese ceremonial dance, which
will be performed by shrine maidens. There will be two
sessions, 4:00 - 5:00pm and 5:00 -
6:00pm.

Veil of
Reality

Created by Serbia-based designer
Ivana Popov, Veil of Reality is an exhibition of
her newest cycle of textiles.
Popov creates
textile collages that beautifully combine an assortment
of herbs, flowers, glittering powder, and transparent
sheets. Fascinated by eastern culture, her textiles form
a subtle dialogue of ancient rituals and traditions. Her
bold mixtures of colors and shapes transport the viewer
into the realm of tea rituals, flower ceremonies, and
Tibetan mandalas. At the same time, Popov's textiles
contain a type of organic sensuality and childlike
joyfulness.
