Cybercouture.com presented the new
edition of its publishing series "The Bridge." Pia
Myrvold, the founder, artistic director and head
designer put together an incredible team for all of the
different aspects of production. The main collaboration
was with industrial designer Karim Rashid for a
collection of three parts: Hypermix, Slow Tech and
Cyberware. Hypermix and Cyberware were created with
innovative tools and technologies to produce highly
complicated prints, whereas Slow Tech utilized
traditional production techniques.

Community: An
Installation by designRAW
|
|
designRAW is a collective of
industrial design professionals working in San
Francisco, CA. The collective, the brainchild of Tad
Toulis, was formed with the objective of offering
members an opportunity and forum for exploring design
issues outside of their professional activities.
Taking the form of a giant maze, the
installation investigated how notions of community are
reinforced and reaffirmed through the decisions and
assumptions we make every day. Using devices as
seemingly unrelated as oranges and saws, Community
presented participants with a series of vignettes
designed to prod, poke, and unearth the range of
preconceptions and beliefs that shape the ways in which
we perceive the world about us.
So join in, step
up and step in. The choice before you may be yours but
the consequence is ours: Community.

Find Your Inner
MacGyver
|
|
|
In the 1980's, the campy television
series "MacGyver" highlighted a resourceful spy
that used his wits and whatever he had on hand - a piece
of wire, sunlight, a glass shard - to get himself out of
tricky situations.
This exhibition by Danny
Seo focused on resourceful design and showcased
designers and manufacturers who, like MacGyver, have
found uses for items normally destined for the
landfill.

Commune
|
|
The members of Group Inc.
presented "Commune," an exhibition that was a reaction
to the current trends in: technology (allowing
easier and faster communication over distances),
global community (which gives the individual a
sense of community beyond their immediate sphere of
experience), and product specificity (the ability
to cater products to suite the specific needs of each
individual consumer).
The previously
mentioned factors, although in most ways beneficial,
have resulted in voids in human interaction. The
greatest effect has been felt at the communication level
of immediate company (ones that you live or work with
i.e. co-workers, roommates and/or family).
The
Commune exhibit took this symptom of progress and
addressed it through design.
