幸福大使プロジェクトは、2011年東日本大震災時に海外から日本へ贈られた震災支援への恩返しプロジェクトとして発足した民間による国際社会貢献です。
幸福大使Proは各界を代表する専門家によって組織され、第1回目をカリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校、サンタバーバラ美術館において、2014年1月に実施されました。
第1回ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録された「能楽」より十世片山九郎右衛門さん、「和食 日本人の伝統的な食文化」の無形文化遺産登録を記念し、京都「重要文化財杉本家住宅」十代目 伝統料理研究家 杉本節子さん、そして2013年に行われた伊勢神宮「式年遷宮」ならびに出雲大社「平成の大遷宮」の撮影に取り組んだ写真家 増浦行仁さんにより結成され、今を生きる私たち世代が、将来世代へと続くグローバルカルチャーに貢献する新たな歴史的一歩が標されました。
The arts have been integral to human society for tens of thousands of years—from the cave paintings and rituals of the earliest humans to the digital media and entertainment of the 21st century. The arts are central to what makes us human, both as individuals and as a society. The expression and experience of art enrich our culture and community. They enable us to represent our lives and understand the lives of others, to communicate across languages, to make sense of our past and imagine our future.
Arts education deepens experience, creativity, and powers of observation in students at every level.
An important engine of economic growth, the arts also stimulate the innovation and collaboration that are crucial to economic competitiveness in our global economy.
UC Santa Barbara, which has vibrant and distinguished programs in the arts and humanities, is honored to have the opportunity to host Master Artists from Japan: Living Traditions, a week-long artist residency that brings to our campus and community three distinguished Japanese artists who represent rich traditions that continue to make vital contributions to our global culture. We are proud of our many strengths in Japanese Studies, not only in our Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies but also in a variety of programs, including History, Art History, Music, Theater, and Film and Media Studies.
We thank our partners, including Felissimo, Japan, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Friends of Asian Art, and the UCSB College of Creative Studies, for helping us to introduce these remarkable Kofuku Taishi cultural ambassadors to our students, faculty, and community.

芸術は、洞窟絵や古代人の宗教儀式に始まり、21世紀のデジタルメディアやエンターテイメントに至るまで、何万年にもわたって、人間社会にとって不可欠なものでありました。芸術は、われわれが、個人として、また、社会において、人間らしくあるための中核をなすものであり、芸術を表現し、体験することは、文化やコミュニティーを豊かにします。芸術を通して、われわれは、自分のいのちを表現し、他者のいのちを理解することができます。芸術は、言語を超えて通じあうことができ、また、過去を理解し、未来を想像することができます。芸術教育は、経験や創造性を豊かにし、あらゆるレベルの学生の観察力を深めます。さらに、芸術は、経済成長の重要な原動力として、グローバル経済における競争力にとって欠かせない革新性や協調性をも活性化するのです。
カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校には、人文科学分野において、活気ある、優れたプログラムがあり、このたび、「日本の一流アーティスト：生きた伝統」を主宰するはこびとなりましたことは、たいへん光栄なことであります。一週間のアーティスト滞在研修では、グローバル文化に活力を与え続けている豊かな伝統を表現する、三名の著名な日本のアーティストをお招きいたします。
わが校は、東アジア言語・文化研究学科をはじめ、歴史、芸能史、音楽、舞台、映像メディア研究などのあらゆるプログラムにおいて、日本研究に多大なる強みをもっており、このことは私どもの誇りであります。
最後になりましたが、日本の株式会社フェリシモ、アジア芸術サンタバーバラ美術館フレンズ・オブ・アジアン・アート、カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校創造研究部の方々のご協力により、わが校の学生、学部、コミュニティーに、この素晴らしい幸福文化大使の方々を紹介することができますことに、感謝を申し上げたいと思います。
